About Umeå University

Umeå University (UMU) is the fifth oldest university in Sweden. Thanks to its rich history dating back to 1965 when the university was founded, UMU plays a crucial role in the region’s development.

Information about the Spring/January 2020 intake

 

1. Master’s Programme in Chemistry

 

Application deadline: 15 August 2019

Duration: 2 years (120 credits)

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent first-cycle qualification comprising of at least 180 ECTS or a corresponding qualification from an internationally recognised university. Specific entry requirements are: 60 ECTS in Chemistry.
  • IELTS: minimum score 6.5 with no individual score below 5.5 (equivalent to English course B/6)*
  • Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6

2. Master’s Programme in Earth Science

 

Application deadline: 15 August 2019

Duration: 2 years (120 credits)

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent first-cycle qualification comprising of at least 180 ECTS or a corresponding qualification from an internationally recognized university. Specific entry requirements are: 90 ECTS in Earth science alternatively 60 ECTS in Biology, Chemistry or Environmental science and 30 ECTS in Earth science.
  • IELTS: minimum score 6.5
  • Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6.

4. Master’s Programme in Molecular Biology

 

Application deadline: 15 August 2019

Duration: 2 years (120 credits)

  • A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent first-cycle qualification comprising of at least 180 ECTS or a corresponding qualification from an internationally recognised university. Specific entry requirements are: a) 60 ECTS in the Bioscience area (including genetics, microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology, zoo physiology and plant biology) and also including a minimum of 7.5 ECTS in each of Genetics and Microbiology. b) 30 ECTS in Chemistry, with a minimum of 7,5 ECTS in Biochemistry. c) practical experience of laboratory work, corresponding to a minimum of 30 ECTS.
  • IELTS: minimum score 6.5
  • Proficiency in English equivalent to Swedish upper secondary course English B/6.

*GENERAL ENGLISH PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS:

You are considered to meet High level English proficiency requirements (equivalent to English course B/6 from Swedish upper Secondary School) if you have:

  • IELTS: minimum score 6.5 with no individual score below 5.5
  • At least two years of university studies in the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Great Britain
  • A Bachelor’s degree from a university where English is the only language of instruction, according to the latest edition of International Handbook of Universities.
  • A Bachelor’s degree (a Swedish Kandidatexamen or equivalent academic qualifications) with English as the major subject.
  • Have a 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Natural Science or Technology from India or Pakistan.
